1. Restaurants.

The eateries in the Alps frequently achieve Michelin star status, with Courchevel alone boasting 7 Michelin restaurants. Such outstanding food makes certain mountain resorts a haven for foodies, but of course excellence doesn’t come for free. If you’re looking to stick to a budget, disregard the more famous food centres and instead consider the excellent traditional mountain food on offer for fair prices in most of the European resorts.

2. Bars and Clubs.

Après ski might be an afterthought for some, but for other it’s the entire reason to go skiing. Whether you want to party until dawn or wind down in a quiet little town, you should consider what the different resorts offer; Zermatt is infamous for its high class, high cost, sophisticated nightlife, while the Andorran resorts tend to be more student-driven and energetic, but both offer great choices for a good night out.

3. Spas and relaxation.

Whether you include spa facilities in your holiday stipulations or not, the likelihood is that your resort will have some kind of spa/massage/relaxation centre. Though back home it may seem like an unnecessary extravagance, it’s worth considering how appealing the reasonably priced spa environment might be after a long day on the freezing slopes. If the idea appeals to you, check out the facilities available before you book. Ready for a hot pool with a view on the snowy mountains? Try Le Lagon in Tignes Le Lac, or the Espace Mille8 in Les Arcs 1800, or the legendary Bains du Monêtier in Serre-Chevalier Le Monêtier
