The village remains one of the smaller resorts to be created during France’s ski boom of the Sixties and Seventies. Compact in size and largely pedestrianised, La Flaine is particularly well known for being family orientated; the little ones will be busy having fun at one of the crèches, while the older kids can attend one of the ski schools.
This convenient skiing village has all you need. Besides the usual facilities of a ski resort there is an art gallery, library (books are available in English), also you will notice impressive giant sculptures by Picasso, Dubuffet and Vasarely adorning the centre. Flaine’s scenery is very pretty, situated in a natural bowl with wooded hillsides and rocky edges. In particular the dividing ridges across the Molliets and Vernant valleys are especially beautiful. In the midst of tranquil and protected nature, this unassuming mountain village is an ideal place to unwind.
The cable car heads to the top of the bowl where you can access the red and blue pistes (there is also one black), which run all the way back to the resort. Locally there are also options for longer runs including a green one.
There is no doubt that Flaine is situated in a great location, just outside the bowl awaits the huge ski domain of Grand Massif, where reliable snow fall is ensured throughout the season. Here you have access to excellent slopes for all levels of skiing, with descents from up to 14km in length to the villages in the valley below including Sixt, Samoëns, Morillon and Les Carroz.
With a number of events put on throughout the year, La Flaine creates memorable days for families.
February Festival (12th Febuary – 9th March 2018) is a month of on-going entertainment; every week there is something new with parades, concerts and shows. Be sure not to miss out on the traditional torchlight and fireworks that light up the night sky.
Shortly afterwards, Springtime in Flaine begins (From 12th March – 20th April 2018) and so does the party with music galore, ranging from classical to electro. During this spring time Après ski is taken over by free concerts on the slopes and terraces in the open-air, making for lively evenings and lasting memories.
