Dog Skijoring
Depending on the size of the rider and the power of the dog(s), between 1 and 3 dogs are commonly used to pull the skier along. In this instance the skier is providing a large part of the power using skis and poles, while the dogs keep up the momentum and speed. One of the downsides to skijoring with dogs is the lack of control – the skier has no method to govern the movement, speed, or direction or the dogs, however this also prevents them from being overworked.

Horse Skijoring
Equestrian skijoring is much more similar to water skiing in the sense that there are no poles, just one line connected to the source of power- in this case that is the horse. In France there are riderless equestrian skijoring competitions with specially trained horses, however most authorities insist on horses controlled by competent riders, as well as helmets and other safety precautions. The aim of the sport varies by events, but the main goals are generally speed, height and length of jumps, and clearing obstacles such as slalom gates and collecting rings. The motorized method of skijoring is essentially the same, with the position of the horse replaced by a snowmobile or other such vehicle. Other variations include yak skiing, a sport practised exclusively in the Indian hill resort of Manali.
